Description This vacancy is for a GS-1603-7, Facility Services Assistant located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, BASE LOS ANGELES LONG BEACH FACILITIES ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT -F, San Pedro, CA.

You will serve as a Facility Services Assistant and be responsible for a wide variety of support functions including facilities maintenance management, procurement requests, department budget tracking, and electronic systems manager responsibilities in support of internal management operations and management of workload for the Public Works Division.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Managing the department's facilities maintenance software program, the Shore Asset Management System (SAMS) used for scheduling and tracking recurring preventive maintenance (PM) items and non-recurring corrective maintenance work order requests, maintaining real property and equipment records, and tracking materials and funding.
  • Scheduling all routine and repetitive work order to the Facilities Engineering Department (FED) shops and checking completed work orders for required input prior to entering data.
  • Utilizing SAMS to issue and schedule routine Preventive Maintenance (PM), repair and replacement of all equipment and machinery.
  • Preparing, or assisting in preparing, monthly, quarterly, and annual maintenance and operational program reports which may include major items of repair, problems occurring, and information affecting workload.
  • Making comparative analysis of actual costs versus estimates, reasons for delays when timetable was exceeded, impact of various changes or modification, or other topics for research evaluation.
  • Maintaining status of shop budgets, records, and tracking expenditures among shop accounts.

To qualify at the GS-07 grade level, applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Specialized experience must include the following:

  • Preparing annual purchase requests for field maintenance contractual services (such as electric, telephone service, garbage pick-up, water, mowing and maintenance and janitorial).
  • Elevating inquiries about work order status, equipment maintenance history, work order numbers, trouble reports, outage requests, and other preventive maintenance questions.
  • Compiling, preparing, and generating various reports, records, statistics, listings, charts and graphs, or other preventive maintenance related information as requested.

NOTE: Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
